The Paul Hornung Award

Award Presented by Texas Roadhouse, Given to Nation’s Most Versatile Player

LouisvilLe, Ky. – Nov. 1, 2022 – Four players led their teams to wins in week nine of the college football season to earn the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll. Making the list are Shadrick Byrd, Charlotte; Lexington Joseph, FIU; Jaylin Lane; MTSU; and Nikko Remigio, Fresno State.

The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, now in its 13th season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission. The Award pays tribute to the late football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner in downtown Louisville in March 2023.

Charlotte sophomore RB / return specialist Shadrick Byrd touched the ball 19 times three different ways for 229 all-purpose yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ 56-23 win over Rice on the road. Byrd carried the ball 13 times for 83 yards, including a four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and caught three passes for 58 yards. He accounted for seven first downs from scrimmage, returned three kickoffs for a 29-yard average per return and played 54 total snaps.

FIU junior RB / return specialist Lexington Joseph touched the ball 19 times three different ways for 123 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns in overtime to lead FIU to a 42-34 home win over Louisiana Tech. Joseph carried the ball 12 times and scored on a pair of one-yard runs in extra periods, the second proved to be the winning score. He also caught four passes and returned three kickoffs as FIU evened its record at 4-4.

Middle Tennessee sophomore WR / return specialist Jaylin Lane touched the ball 12 times receiving, rushing and returning punts and scored once in the Blue Raiders’ 24-13 road win over UTEP. Lane caught seven passes for 147 yards, including a 77-yard bomb mid-fourth quarter that effectively put the game out of reach. He also carried the ball one time and seven of his touches from scrimmage accounted for first downs.

Fresno State senior WR / return specialist Nikko Remigio touched the ball 12 times three different ways and scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner, in the Bulldogs’ 32-28 home win over San Diego State. Remigio caught a 21-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, then hauled in a 37-yard scoring strike with less than a minute to play to seal the win. He caught 10 passes for 128 yards and seven first downs, returned a kickoff 30 yards and fair caught one punt.

The Louisville Sports Commission successfully launched the Paul Hornung Award in 2010 to honor its namesake and native son, and to promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed. Each week during the regular season, a panel of college football experts selects players for the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll based on performance. A national selection committee comprised of 17 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award finalists and the winner, with fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse comprising the 18th vote. Regional accounting firm Dean Dorton independently tabulates all votes.
