National Award to Recognize Excellence in Sports Health and Athlete Performance
Award will Honor the Legacy of the Late Dr. Raymond Shea
Louisville, Ky. – Feb. 21, 2024 – The Louisville Sports Commission and UofL Health announced today a partnership to create a national award that recognizes excellence in sports health and athlete performance.
The Dr. Raymond Shea Health & Performance Champion Award will acknowledge individuals for their dedication and commitment to the overall health of college athletes. Dr. Shea was an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with UofL Health – Jewish Hospital and team physician for the University of Louisville football team for more than 30 years. Eligible individuals include physical therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, strength coaches and orthopedic specialists, as well as those who provide support for emotional and mental health.
“Sports medicine professionals are a vital part of any winning team. Dr. Shea was passionate about caring for athletes and we are proud to carry on his legacy,” said Tom Miller, UofL Health CEO. “Whether it’s on the sidelines, the practice field or in the gym, elite athletes deserve elite care. UofL Health – Sports Medicine provides that for our hometown teams and this award recognizes that impact across the world of college athletics.”
Each year, the winner of the Paul Hornung Award will select the person to be honored. University of Colorado sophomore cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter, the 2023 Paul Hornung Award winner, has selected Anthony Pass, Colorado’s head football athletic trainer as the inaugural award recipient. Pass was chosen based on the positive influence he had on Hunter as an athlete and young man.
“Anthony Pass has played a significant role in my life on and off the field,” said Travis Hunter. “His training, guidance and support have shaped me physically as a player and helped me mentally become the best athlete and man I can be both on the field and at home. I am grateful for his guidance and support, and I couldn’t do what I do without him.”
“There are many professionals who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure student-athletes safely compete at the highest level,” said Louisville Sports Commission President & CEO Greg Fante. “We’re excited to have this opportunity to recognize an individual who makes sure college athletes are healthy from a holistic standpoint.”
Pass will be recognized along with Travis Hunter on March 8, 2024, at the Paul Hornung Awards Ceremony presented by UofL Health at the Galt House Hotel.
